The UN Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues is the most important international dialogue space<\/strong> that discusses priority\nissues for indigenous peoples. Each year, the Permanent Forum receives\nindigenous organizations, UN agencies, the academia and civil society and they\ncome up with a series of recommendations\non the social, political, economic and cultural development<\/strong> of indigenous\npeoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These recommendations become an important instrument to advocate for\ntheir rights internationally, and their implementation is of utmost importance\nat the local, national and international level. Unfortunately, in many countries either there is no\nawareness<\/strong> of their existence or the efforts to make them become part of the\ngovernment and UN agencies\u2019 programs and policies are not enough. Similarly,\nthe efforts to make the recommendations find their way into the agendas of\nindigenous organizations and committed civil society groups together with their\ncampaigns and demands are not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the purpose of closing this information gap, Tarcila Rivera Zea,\nexpert member of the Permanent Forum, is promoting the digital initiative Yanpaq.info<\/strong>, a search and monitoring platform\nof Permanent Forum recommendations. The website was presented at the United\nNations in New York during the 18th session of the Permanent Forum, in an event\nhosted by CHIRAPAQ and the Permanent Mission of Peru to the UN, with the\ntechnical support of the Indigenous peoples\u2019 centre for documentation, research\nand information (DoCip). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, permanent representative of Peru to the\nUnited Nations, highlighted that Yanapaq.info has the \u201cpotential and the value\nof getting us closer to the Forum recommendations from a friendly and objective\nperspective\u201d. Likewise, he said that using the platform will enrich the\ndemocratic dialogue about indigenous peoples in pursuit of reaching the\nSustainable Development Goals (SDGs). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, Peruvian politician Tania Pariona Tarqui pledged to\nshare the platform and the recommendations with her fellow members of\nParliament so that they become aware of the commitments about indigenous\npeoples\u2019 rights that Peru must honor. Pariona explained that the lack of\nawareness on what indigenous peoples and their rights are what is a great\nbarrier to making progress on the implementation of the Permanent Forum\nrecommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The anthropologist and expert on indigenous issues Elsa Stamatopoulou described\nthe platform as an incredible initiative and highlighted its importance in a\ncontext where information is not reliable. Stamatopoulou remarked that collecting,\nclassifying and connecting the recommendations of the Permanent Forum to other\ninstruments of rights will help to strengthen democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yanapaq means \u201chelper\u201d<\/strong>\nin Quechua and it aims at promoting access to information on Permanent Forum\nrecommendations in a quick and simple way. The platform connects the\nrecommendation with the relevant Sustainable Development Goals and articles of\nthe United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
